What Your Teen Hears: Themes in Today’s Music
The themes in today’s music influence teenage boys and girls more than any other media outlet. Studies have shown that teenagers listen to music anywhere from two to five hours a day. While there are some positive messages being sent through mainstream music, much of the content has a negative theme. At Cedar Ridge Academy we understand that the growing technology in our society enables teens to access more music than ever before, which is why we believe in the importance of teaching our troubled teens to decide for themselves what music is acceptable listening. Music Shapes the Lives of Teenage Boys & Girls
There are three main ways in which music influences the development of adolescents. The first is it helps to shape their perception of society and reality. Teenagers are typically in a stage of uncertainty, and many of them use the content provided by mainstream music to teach them about the realities of life. That is why it is critical that teens learn to listen to music with positive undertones.
Secondly, music helps to shape troubled teen’s behaviors. Music videos often teach teenagers what kind of shoes or clothes to wear, sexuality, spirituality, values, and many other aspects of their lives. It is critical that teens listen to uplifting, positive music, in order to develop into respectable young adults.
Thirdly, it helps them learn that they are not alone in their struggles. A lot of music contains stories about the artist going through similar situations that the teen is experiencing, helping the teen to relate to the music. Some music can be relatable to teenagers in a negative way however, which can only compound the problem. If we teach our adolescents to think critically about the music they listen to, then we can improve music’s ability to positively impact their lives.
Cedar Ridge Academy Teaches Troubled teens to listen to positive music
At Cedar Ridge Academy, we are a therapeutic boarding school for troubled teens that can help them get their lives back on track in every area. Our therapy is centered on keeping our students physically active, improving their confidence and self-esteem. This helps them to effectively make positive decisions on their own, enabling them to effectively critique the music they listen to. We also offer exceptional academics, including a number of online courses. This familiarizes our students with a lot of mainstream media, also teaching them how to choose what music is positive and what isn’t.
