Music Shapes the Lives of Teenage Boys & Girls
There are three main ways in which music influences the development of adolescents. The first is it helps to shape their perception of society and reality. Teenagers are typically in a stage of uncertainty, and many of them use the content provided by mainstream music to teach them about the realities of life. That is why it is critical that teens learn to listen to music with positive undertones. Secondly, music helps to shape troubled teen's behaviors. Music videos often teach teenagers what kind of shoes or clothes to wear, sexuality, spirituality, values, and many other aspects of their lives. It is critical that teens listen to uplifting, positive music, in order to develop into respectable young adults. Thirdly, it helps them learn that they are not alone in their struggles. A lot of music contains stories about the artist going through similar situations that the teen is experiencing, helping the teen to relate to the music. Some music can be relatable to teenagers in a negative way, however - which can only compound the problem. If we teach our adolescents to think critically about the music they listen to, then we can improve music's ability to positively impact their lives.
